Awareness - A Proposed 12th Principle of Burning Man
March 23, 2025
Backpack Packers, Burners and Cosmic Explorers, gather 'round the mutant vehicle of consciousness, because I would like to propose the 12th principle of burning man: Awareness & Earth Harmony.
Yes, I know, you're thinking, "But I'm totally aware! I'm aware that my tutu is fabulous, my art car is a masterpiece, and my camp's sound system can summon desert ravens!" But, my glitter-dusted friends, we're talking about a deeper kind of awareness. The kind that makes you ask, "Is my playa dedication a spiritual pilgrimage, or just a really dusty excuse to escape reality?"
People who are not burners see burning man as a big wasteful party in the desert. We need to be aware that that is what it looks like on the outside, and there is a lot of truth to it. Burning Man is a lot of things to a lot of people, and wastefulness is definitely a quality that isn't easy to face or fix.
Think of it this way: Earth is throwing a massive, global "Oops, I set the kitchen on fire" party, and we're all invited. While we're out here creating transcendent art and burning effigies, the ice caps are throwing their own melting extravaganza.
"There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth, we are all crew."
- Marshall McLuhan
Earth is trying to burn man, while burners are going to burning man. Let face it, admit it, and work towards a more holistic expression of our playa passions. One that includes the awareness that we are all in this together.
Awareness In The Context of Burning Man:
Seeing the Burn in Context: It's not just a week of wild abandon; it's a blip in the grand, chaotic symphony of existence. How does your camp's footprint harmonize with the Earth's delicate dance? Are your playa projects contributing to the solution, or just adding to the cosmic pile of "whoops"?
Spiritual Pilgrimage, Not Just Annual Vacation: Going to Burning Man should feel less like a mandatory summer festival and more like a soul-searching journey. If you're just going because "it's Tuesday, and that's when we burn," maybe it's time to re-evaluate.
Resource Reallocation, Playa Style: All that burner energy? That creative fire? Let's redirect it! Instead of building a towering, flame-spewing octopus (though, admittedly, those are awesome), maybe we build a community garden, or a solar-powered water filtration system. Regional burns, closer to home, can be a great outlet for this energy, and much easier on the planet.
Wakadoodle Fun with a Purpose: Yes, you can still have wacky radical self expressful adventures! But ask yourself: how can this fun contribute to a greater understanding of our place in the universe? Can we build art that inspires action? Can our parties spark conversations about sustainability?
The BORG's New Reality Check: Forget low-income tickets; let's have "high-awareness" tickets. Show the BORG how your presence will elevate the collective consciousness, how you'll contribute to a more sustainable future, or how your journey is a true spiritual pilgrimage. And if you've been a regular playa patron, perhaps it's your turn to support those who are seeking the burn for truly transformative reasons. Let's lower the population of burning man each year, and increase the ticket price, while putting some of the surplus money on more environmentalism and awareness.
“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
In Essence, Awareness is About Asking:
"How does my playa experience contribute to the healing of our planet?"
"Am I here for escapism, or for expansion and growth?"
"How can my burner spirit serve humanity beyond the playa's edge?"
Let's make Burning Man a beacon of conscious creativity, a place where we not only burn the man, but also ignite a global awakening. Because, let's face it, we're all in this cosmic dust storm together.
